Drug Uses
Allopurinol is indicated for healing of gout. It is used to treat high uric acid levels in the blood or urine caused by certain types of cancer chemotherapy. It is also used to treat certain people with calcium oxalate kidney stones and high amounts of uric acid in the urine. It may also used for other conditions as prescribed by your physician.
How Taken
Allopurinol is taken orally. Visit your physician regarding the dose suitable for your condition. To avoid stomach upset take Allopurinol with a meal. It is advised to drink extra fluids while undergoing treatment with Allopurinol. It can take two to six weeks to receive the full benefit of Allopurinol. Continue taking Allopurinol even if you feel well.
Additional Information
Allopurinol may cause dizziness or lightheadedness. These effects may worsen if Allopurinol is taken with alcohol. Take Allopurinol with caution. Do not drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you respond to this product. Follow the diet and exercise program given to you by your health care provider. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, talk to your physician. Allopurinol should be used only by the patient for whom it has been recommended. Do not take less or more or take it more often than advised by your doctor.
