Drug Uses
Allopurinol is indicated for healing of gout. It is used to treat high uric acid levels in the blood or urine caused by certain types of cancer chemotherapy. It is also can be used to treat certain patients with calcium oxalate kidney stones and high amounts of uric acid in the urine. It may also can be used for other conditions as prescribed by your physician.
How Taken
Allopurinol is taken orally. Notify your doctor regarding the dose suitable for your condition. To avoid stomach upset take Allopurinol with a meal. It is advised to drink extra fluids while undergoing healing with Allopurinol. It may take 2 to 6 weeks to receive the full benefit of Allopurinol. Continue taking this drug even if you feel well.

Allopurinol can cause dizziness or lightheadedness. These effects may worsen if Allopurinol is taken with alcohol. Take Allopurinol with caution. Don't drive or perform other possibly dangerous tasks until you know how you respond to this medicine. Follow the diet and exercise program given to you by your health care provider. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, contact your physician. Allopurinol should be used only by the patient for whom it has been determined. Don't take less or more or take it more often than recommended by your doctor.
