Drug Uses
Allopurinol is indicated for treatment of gout. It is used to treat high uric acid levels in the blood or urine caused by certain types of cancer chemotherapy. It is also used to cure certain people with calcium oxalate kidney stones and high amounts of uric acid in the urine. It can also can be used for other conditions as prescribed by your physician.
How Taken
Allopurinol is taken by mouth. Visit your physician regarding the dosage suitable for your condition. To avoid stomach upset take Allopurinol with a meal. It is advised to drink extra fluids while undergoing curing with Allopurinol. It can take two to six weeks to receive the full benefit of Allopurinol. Continue taking this pill even if you feel well.

Allopurinol may cause dizziness or lightheadedness. These effects may worsen if Allopurinol is taken with alcohol. Take Allopurinol with caution. Don't drive or perform other possibly unsafe tasks until you know how you respond to this drug. Follow the diet and exercise program given to you by your health care provider. If your symptoms don't improve or if they worsen, call your doctor. Allopurinol should be used only by the patient for whom it has been recommended. Do not take less or more or take it more often than recommended by your physician.
