Drug Uses
Allopurinol is indicated for healing of gout. It is used to cure high uric acid levels in the blood or urine caused by certain types of cancer chemotherapy. It is also used to treat certain people with calcium oxalate kidney stones and high amounts of uric acid in the urine. It may also used for other conditions as advised by your doctor.
How Taken
Allopurinol is taken orally. Contact your physician regarding the dose suitable for your condition. To avoid stomach upset take Allopurinol with a meal. It is advised to drink extra fluids while undergoing healing with Allopurinol. It may take 2 to 6 weeks to receive the full benefit of Allopurinol. Continue taking this drug even if you feel well.
Additional Information
Allopurinol may cause dizziness or lightheadedness. These effects may worsen if Allopurinol is taken with alcohol. Use Allopurinol with caution. Don't drive or perform other possibly dangerous tasks until you know how you react to this drug. Follow the diet and exercise program given to you by your health care provider. If your symptoms don't improve or if they worsen, call your physician. Allopurinol should be used only by the patient for whom it has been determined. Do not take less or more or take it more often than recommended by your doctor.
